Submeasure 2.3.1:
Projects related to development of IT infrastructure of the science

Submeasure 2.3.3:
Projects related to development of advanced ICT applications and services

Title of the Project:

"PLATON - Science Services Platform"

Duration of the project:

Start date:
1st July 2008
Completion date:
25th July 2012

Objective of the project:

Development of the national ICT infrastructure for science (PIONIER network) providing applications and services to support scientific research and development of polish research teams for the innovative economy. The direct goal of the project is to implement modern ICT services: videoconference services, eduroam services, campus services, archiving services and science HD tv services available to the scientific community in Poland.

Description of the Project:

The PLATON Project aims to create and activate 5 services based on the PIONIER network. These services are:

Videoconference Services: realized by building a high-quality, secure videoconference system in the PIONIER network, which will enable point-to-point connections, as well as connections between multiple locations simultaneously but also give the possibility to record and replay particular videoconferences.

Eduroam Sevices: simple and secure roaming for people from the scientific and academic community in Poland by launching model secure systems of access to the wireless network in every MAN network and HPC centre.

Campus Services: services offered on the basis of an innovative computing-service infrastructure of a nationwide range which delivers applications on demand, capable of providing a wide range of users from the scientific and research environments with an elastic and scalable access to specific applications, both in MS Windows and Linux systems (taking into consideration the needs of professional groups in these environments, including the implementation of an integrated system of services managing the grid resources).

Archiving Services: available at a national level, offer remote archiving and backup as a value added to the national, academic and research PIONIER network. Archiving services, which increase the real-time data protection, are one of the elements necessary to increase reliability of functioning of each unit, and are addressed to the academic environment, including the higher education system, research and development units and hospitals dependent on universities and medical universities.

Science HD TV Services: the national platform offering interactive science HD television which delivers services in the PIONIER network and is based on high definition digital content for both education and popularization of science and telemedicine.
